Lists, Quotes & Code

Lists, quotes, and code blocks are lines that start with a mark, like - for a list item or > for a quote. The Format menu types the marks for you.

Lists

To make a list

Start a line with - for a bullet, 1. for a number, or - [ ] for a task. Indent an item to nest it:

markdown
- Bread
- Apples
    - Two for pie

1. Preheat the oven
2. Mix the batter

- [x] Book the flight
- [ ] Pack

Or use:

  • Format > Lists > Bulleted List (Command-L)
  • Format > Lists > Task List (Option-Command-L)
  • Format > Lists > Ordered List (Shift-Command-L)

Press Return to continue a list. Press it on an empty item to step out a level. Tab and Shift-Tab indent and outdent list items.

Numbered lists renumber as you edit, or use Format > Lists > Renumber List.

Set bullets and renumbering in WriteRoom > Settings > Markdown > Lists.

To check off a task

  • Click its checkbox
  • Or use Format > Lists > Mark as Completed (Shift-Command-C)

Checking a task checks its subtasks too. Checking the last open subtask checks its parent. Turn this off in WriteRoom > Settings > Markdown > Lists.

Quotes and Code

To make a quote

Start a line with >:

markdown
> The harbor was quiet the night before she sailed.

Or use Format > Quote (Shift-Command-').

To make a code block

Put the code between lines of three backticks. Name a language after the first fence to color it:

markdown
```swift
let greeting = "Hello"
```

Or use Format > Code > Code Block (Option-Command-C).

To turn a heading, list item, or quote back into a plain paragraph, use Format > Body.

Rules

To add a horizontal rule

  • Edit > Insert > Horizontal Rule (Control-Command--)
